The Limitless Capabilities of the α7RII Interchangeable Lens Camera Shooting using EF mount adapter with electronic contacts, to enable AF operation AF with Canon EF lenses

EF mount adapter with Canon EF lenses

As has been explained so far, the α7RII (as well as all sony α7 Series) has an extremely short flange-back distance compared to an ordinary single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, and thus one of its key features is the ability to mount a variety of SLR lenses via mount adapters. However, since the Canon EF lens uses an electromagnetic diaphragm, shooting will always have to be done at maximum aperture if you use a simple mount adapter which only converts the mount form, without electronic contacts.

With the launch of the α7 Series, which are equipped with a full-frame sensor, EF lens mount adapters equipped with electronic contacts became available. These go beyond just enabling aperture control from the camera body. They also allow use of image stabilization equipped in lenses, and although their speed is not that high, they also allow AF operation with some lenses.

■ METABONES EF-E Mount T Ver. 4
METABONES was a pioneer among EF mount adapters with electronic contacts. The most recent version features a wider opening to handle shift lenses, and a flocked coating made of many small hairs to almost totally eliminate internal reflection. The adapter has a micro USB terminal and firmware can be updated by the user. Tamron lenses generally work with the adapter, but unfortunately they are somewhat unstable and sometimes reset. Nevertheless, the low level of internal reflection deserves special mention.

■ TECHART EOS-NEXIII
This adapter is optimized for Nor (normal mode) supporting the phase-detection AF of the α7RII, and for the previous fast hybrid AF of models such as the α7 and α7II. It is possible to switch to the Fn (enhanced mode) for operation with AF-C. Although certain lenses work at high-speed with the current firmware, there are some lenses with poor compatibility, and operation with Tamron lenses is unstable. Some lenses exhibit improved operation in Fn mode. The adapter supports firmware updates via Blutooth from a smartphone, so we hope to see updates in the future.

■ VILTROX EF-NEX II
The attraction here is the reasonable pricing as an EF mount adapter with electronic contacts. There is almost no difference in terms of AF speed with high-priced adapters. We have not tried this adapter with all lenses, but operation is stable even with the main Tamron lenses. However, in strong backlight, flare occurs in some cases due to internal reflection in the mount adapter. In addition, no means is provided for users to update firmware, but that’s part of purchasing an low-cost adapter.

■ SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11
MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 incorporates the digital data necessary to provide fast and smooth AF for compatible lenses as well as OS features and functions of the camera that help control peripheral brightness and correct transverse chromatic aberration, distortion, and more. The LED display on the MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 makes it easy to know whether an attached lens is compatible or not and whether the mount converter control data needs to be updated for operation with that lens.
