Three Mirrorless Cameras That Are Perfect Travelling Companions (1)

In the first of this series we look at the LUMIX DC-GF9K, which is light, compact and useful for selfies

When taking a mini-break, you want a digital camera to have many abilities. It should be portable, for example, when you put it in a small bag or hang it from your neck. It should operate fast and smoothly when the good moment arrives. And whatever the subject, say portraits or townscapes, it should depict them vividly.

Today mirrorless cameras that meet such needs are proliferating. They are smaller and lighter than DSLR cameras, hence perfect travelling companions.

We asked Hiromichi Kawano, a writer with expert knowledge on cameras, to examine the performance of three latest models, especially size, speed and usability.

1: Panasonic LUMIX DC-GF9K double lens kit

Specifications
Sensor: 4/3 type, 16 MP
Mount: Micro Four-thirds
Screen: 3.0 type, 1.04 million dots
Wi-Fi: Yes
Size: 106.5 x 64.6 x 33.3 mm (W x H x D)
Effective pixels: 16 MP
Continuous shooting: 5 fps
Maximum ISO: 25600
Weight: 269 g

It is light, 269 g, with a tiltable screen, making it easy to take selfies. It takes 4K/30P videos that last for up to five minutes, as well as 4K photos by using continuous shooting at 30 fps. It captures every moment.

It captured the moment of a steam train blowing black smoke. As it is light, carrying it around is not a hassle. You can use it whenever you want.
When the screen pops up, push Fn3 button on the top to release the shutter. When taking selfies, you can do so with your right hand.
There is 4K button near the shutter button, allowing for a quick switch to 4K continuous shots. It seizes every moment.

Size

It is small enough to put into a B4 bag (353 x 250 mm). The camera is useful not just for a minibreak but also for a business trip to record documents.

Speed

It boots quickly. But as the kit lens is retractable, the boot-up process is done through two steps. Leave it pulled back when taking snaps.

Usability

There is a dial in the rear to adjust settings such as exposure. Touch screen response is good and smooth.

Score: 84/100

(design: 16, cost-effectiveness: 16, video: 16, portability: 20, image quality: 16)

The design is compact without a grip. That does not make it easy to hold. But as it is light, you can avoid camera shake if you hold it firmly. Pictures are vivid with high-quality reproduction. 4K videos are excellent, too.
